Delhi is known as The Floral Paradise of Ohio. For that reason, there are many opportunities for care providers and their elderly clients to get out and enjoy some of the town’s natural beauty. The nature activities available in Delhi, OH vary greatly so there’s something that seniors of all abilities will be able to enjoy.

The Delhi Driving Tour, courtesy of the Delhi Historical Society, is a scenic drive through some of the area’s most beautiful and most historic places. The tour begins at the Historical Society’s museum, located at 486 Anderson Ferry Rd and winds through other historic points of interest. Some of the buildings along the route are:

Williams/Shroer House c.1878 – Homestead of one of the area’s first pioneer families
Anderson Ferry – Historic ferry crossing in service since 1878
Biggs House – c.1860 Farmhouse that was later converted to a convent for local nuns
Sisters of Charity Motherhouse – c.1900 Motherhouse for local convent, includes nun cemetery on adjacent hillside
The Old Greenhouse- Site of the first greenhouse built in Delhi

The driving tour is the perfect outing for seniors who may have trouble walking long distances or standing for prolonged periods of time. A map showing the driving route and all its points of interest can be obtained at the Delhi Historical Society office.

Another suggestion for seeing some of Delhi’s natural beauty is the Floral Paradise Gardens. It is comprised of twenty two themed gardens; all created by local businesses and Delhi residents. Some of the themes are an herb garden, butterfly garden, children’s garden, and rose garden. They are open daily from dawn until dusk. What’s interesting about the Floral Paradise Gardens is that each one is linked by a paved path to the adjacent Delhi Park.

Delhi Park is a sprawling 50 acre recreational and sports complex. There are a number of educational programs and sports activities that go on in Delhi Park year round. The park is also the site of Delhi’s Concert in the Park series. If care providers are considering incorporating the outdoor parts of the garden attractions into their outings, they should ensure that their elderly client dresses comfortably and that they keep well hydrated by bringing adequate bottled water along on the trip.
